Are you expecting? If so CONGRATULATIONS! It’s so exciting knowing you’re carrying a human being inside of you.
There are so many blog posts on carrying a baby month to month and everything seems so picture perfect with occasionally some posts of morning sickness.
What no one really talks about, and what many women go through, is what happens when your pregnancy is considered high risk?
This is why I’m writing this blog post on how to survive hospital bed rest when your pregnancy is considered high risk.
High Risk Pregnancy
I certainly felt alone when I went to my monthly check up and was told I had a short cervix and would have to be put on bed rest for a few days.
I remember crying because they told me they did not know if I was going to go into premature labor or not.
It was very scary getting hooked up to so many machines, not knowing what the future would hold.
Well those days turned into weeks and those weeks turned into months.
I was stuck in hospital bed rest for THREE MONTHS. Yes you read that right three long months of hospital bed rest.
Now I know I’m not the only one who has been through this, there have been many women, like myself, who have been though this.
I won’t get into every detail about my stay, I will save that for another blog post.
I searched and searched online for ideas of what to do for months while in the hospital, and only two posts popped up.
So in this post I would like to give some ideas to my strong mama’s out there who are going through the same thing,
No matter if it’s a couple days, weeks, or months of surviving hospital bed rest or even bed rest at home.
While I was in hospital bed rest, they had someone come some days of the week and teach the soon to be moms how to knit.
She was a great knitter and supporter who would listen and talk about her time being there.
One way to survive hospital bed rest is to ask your hospital about any volunteers or people they might have who teach classes for moms on bed rest.
Many moms would spend so much time knitting that one mom even made a business out of it.
She sold some to expecting moms and even started selling some online.
Not to mention, knitting is a great way to pass the time, and I even made some cute booties and hats for my son.
Adult Coloring Books
Adult coloring books would have to be one of the best things invented to pass time.
My now husband bought some coloring books and gel pens off amazon and it was such a great investment.
Here is a link to my favorite coloring book and gel pens: https://amzn.to/3dC6akp Gel pens: https://amzn.to/2Xz36QC
My husband would spend almost everyday with me after work and we would color while talking about his day.
Amazon Fire stick
Something I wish we would have thought about bringing sooner would have to be our amazon fire stick.
Being in the hospital, they don’t have many channels and it gets boring watching the same stuff on t.v.
After being there for a month, we asked the hospital if there was a way we could plug in our amazon fire stick and they said yes.
It’s such a great piece! Watching netflix, hulu, hbo, and other channels was the best thing.
Even the nurses would ask what shows we were watching when they came in.
They even said sometimes people would bring in their playstation or xbox.
Thanks to pinterest, I spent many hours looking up baby blogs and tips for first time moms.
Pinterest is a great way to distract you from being on bed rest and other things going on.
I loved looking up how to decorate the nursery and the best products for babies.
There is so much information for new moms, and I loved getting ideas for my baby.
Go to the Patio
Thankfully, my hospital had a small patio right in the middle of the ward.
My doctor gave the okay to go out there in a wheel chair and just get some fresh air for thirty minutes.
Being locked up in a tiny room all day with no fresh air, I took that opportunity and every night my husband would take me there.
If your hospital has something like that, make sure to ask if it would be okay, even if it is on a wheelchair.
Your hospital may not have a patio, but you can always take laps around the ward you’re at.
There might not be many things an expectant mom can do while on hospital bed rest
Just remember no matter what your favorite pass time is remember who you are doing this for.
I hope some of these tips on how to survive hospital bed rest can be useful to you,
